Layered - FX Page & the Big Knob

The FX Page in Layered gives you powerful creative tools to transform your sound. It’s directly connected to the Big Knob on the Main Page, which acts as a macro controller for the effects inside this section. This article explains each effect available on the FX Page and how to use them.

Accessing the FX Page

  • Click the FX tab at the top of Layered.
  • The Big Knob in the center of the page becomes your main performance control.
  • Each effect is arranged around the Big Knob with dedicated controls.

Effects on the FX Page

Grit

  • Drive – Adds harmonic distortion for warmth or grit.
  • Character – Adjusts the tone of the distortion (from subtle to aggressive).
  • Mix – Blends the distorted signal with the clean signal.

Filter

  • Freq – Sets the cutoff frequency.
  • Resonance – Boosts the area around the cutoff for sharper sweeps.

Filter LFO

  • Depth – Controls how far the filter cutoff moves.
  • Rate – Controls how fast the filter cycles.

Chorus / Phaser

  • Rate – Speed of modulation.
  • Depth – How strong the modulation effect is.
  • Mix – Balance between dry and effected signal.

Stereo Delay / Tape Delay

  • Rolloff – Controls high-frequency dampening.
  • Feedback – Sets how many echoes repeat.
  • Mix – Balances delay with the dry sound.

Gain LFO

  • Depth – Controls intensity of volume modulation (tremolo).
  • Speed – Controls how fast the volume cycles.

Pitch LFO

  • Depth – How far pitch shifts up or down.
  • Speed – Rate of pitch modulation (from vibrato to wild pitch effects).

Shimmer / Plate Reverb

  • Size – Controls the perceived space of the reverb.
  • RTime – Sets the reverb decay length.
  • Mix – Adjusts the balance between dry and reverb.

The Big Knob

  • The Big Knob is a macro that controls one or more parameters across these effects.
  • Its behavior changes depending on the preset: sometimes it increases reverb, sometimes it adds drive, sometimes it morphs multiple effects together.
  • Turning the Big Knob gives you an immediate, dramatic performance-ready change.

Inner Knobs: Defining Range & Sensitivity

Many effects around the Big Knob have a small inner knob that defines how the Big Knob interacts with it. These inner knobs control the start and stop points of the parameter being affected:

  • With the inner knob turned low, the Big Knob only sweeps a small portion of that effect’s range.
  • With the inner knob turned high, the Big Knob sweeps the full parameter range.
  • In practice, this lets you decide how subtle or dramatic the Big Knob’s influence will be for each effect.

In short: the inner knob determines how much of the parameter’s range the Big Knob moves through when you use it.

Creative Tips

  • Combine Filter + Filter LFO for sweeping, rhythmic textures.
  • Use Chorus/Phaser to add motion and stereo width to pads.
  • Pair Grit + Reverb for atmospheric, cinematic sounds.
  • Add Pitch LFO sparingly for subtle vibrato or heavily for experimental textures.
  • Save customized FX settings as user presets to recall them instantly.
