Rendition - How to setup in Reason
Using a VST3 MIDI effect directly "before" an instrument in the Reason Rack is not natively supported in the way you might expect (like dropping it into a "Player" slot).
In Reason 13, the VST container (Plugin Rack Device) does not have a "MIDI Out" cable on the back, meaning it cannot send note data directly to another device in the rack.
However, you can achieve this using the following workaround:
The Wrapper Method
What you need: A plugin capable of hosting other plugins, such as Kushview Element, which is free, or Blue Cat's PatchWork or DDMF Metaplugin, which are paid plug-ins.
How to do it:
- Load the "Wrapper" plugin (e.g., PatchWork) into the Reason Rack.
- Inside the Wrapper's own interface, load your MIDI VST first (e.g. Rendition).
- Inside the same Wrapper, load the instrument VST you want to play immediately after it.
The MIDI will flow from the effect to the instrument inside the wrapper, and the audio will be sent out to Reason.
Why can't I just use a Player?
Reason's "Player" devices (like Scales & Chords, Note Echo) use a proprietary format tailored to the Rack's architecture. Standard VST3 plugins do not communicate using this specific protocol, and Reason's VST container currently blocks standard MIDI note output to the rack cables.
